5 years NN Art Award
The summer edition of Art Rotterdam 2021 marks a remarkable lustrum: the five-year anniversary of the NN Art Award. NN Group has been a partner of Art Rotterdam since 2017 and has since awarded a yearly incentive prize to extraordinary contemporary art talent with an innovative and authentic perspective and visual language. An annually changing jury of art professionals selects four promising talents, from which a winner is ultimately chosen. These are exceptional artists who were trained in the Netherlands and who also show work at the fair. It’s not just a celebration of young talent, but it also includes artists who are further along in their careers. Besides that, the selection criteria are multi-disciplinary, which means that all types of media are being considered.
A gauge of talent
The award shines a spotlight on the high quality of the Dutch art academies. Artists from all over the world come to study at our prestigious postgraduate institutes, including the Rijksakademie, De Ateliers, the Jan van Eyck Academy and the Piet Zwart Institute. Over they years, the award has proved to be an important indicator of talent. The previous winners are the Quistrebert brothers (2017), Pauline Curnier Jardin (2018), Katja Mater (2019) and Ana Navas (2020).
NN Group, the initiator of the incentive prize, is an insurance and asset management company (that includes Nationale-Nederlanden) and an important sponsor of the cultural sector, with a focus on the region of The Hague and Rotterdam.
The winner of the NN Art Award will receive a cash prize of € 10,000. Additionally, the work of the nominees will be prominently displayed at Art Rotterdam in a special stand and NN Group will purchase a work from all nominees for the art collection of NN Group. There will also be an article about the winners on GalleryViewer.com.
Ana Navas (winner 2020): “Receiving the NN Art Award was not just an honor and a way to increase my visibility, but it also proved to be a tremendous support for my artistic production. This funding allowed me to expand my research into the legacy of modern art, leading to new works that were on show in galleries like the Sagrada Mercancía in Santiago de Chile and Nest in The Hague this year.”
A diverse jury of art professionals
The annually changing jury consists of a combination of disciplines: art journalists, curators, museum directors, artists, art collectors and the curator of the NN Group corporate collection. Jury members from previous years included Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy (director of Kunstinstituut Melly), Anna van Leeuwen (art critic of de Volkskrant), Iris Kensmil (visual artist), Jan Pieter Ekker (art director of Het Parool), Eelco van der Lingen (at the time curator at the Fries Museum, currently director of the Mondriaan Fund), Liesbeth Willems (curator of the KRC art collection) and Lieneke Hulshof (chief editor of Mr. Motley magazine). The jury for the 2021 edition of the NN Art Award will consist of Imara Limon (curator for the Amsterdam Museum), Reyn van der Lugt (art collector), Suzanne Swarts (director of Museum Voorlinden), Koen Taselaar (artist and nominee for the NN Art Award 2020) and the curator of the NN Art Collection.
An additional audience award
